Specially for you I decided to do a little tutorial about painting materials.
Everything you need to paint is:
-
carbon paper - if you don't have it, you can simply draw over a sheet of paper with soft pencil (soft pencils have name B with numbers), the one side of sheet need to be black,
-
cardboard - it is a pad, if you are painting clothes, you have to put a cardboard into it, if you not do this, you have colorful stains on a back side.
-
material - in this case, it is a square sheet of linen with tucked in a fast edge; try to paint on a cotton, it absorbs paint,
-
paper - on it we draw our design, you can always print what you would like to paint,
-
pencil and rubber - you need it to draw,
-
pen - we will improve contours with it, it doesn't have to write, the pencil will be ok too,
-
paints - we need textile paints, you can buy it in a shop or by the Internet, they are acrylic paints, but I have never tried to paint on a material with normal acrylic paints; I use paints from Fevicryl, they are good, but they are thin; ones I took a risk of buying paints from Profil and they were so thick that I can't normally paint and, when I diluted them, they behaved strange,
-
brushes - it is good to have many different brushes, they leave different tracks and it makes painting more interesting, however to do this work I will use only one, thin brush,
-
water - I always put it in the same jar, due to this I know that nobody will use it to for example drink; rinse your brushes often,
-
kitchen paper - or something else which can absorb water, try to have your brush always dried and watch if a handle is wet because water can flow down and make a stain which is difficult to remove, of course, if you have thick paints, you have trouble and you need to be careful.
Extra:
-
girls, always tie up your hair, it is easy to make mistake, if you have constantly covered eyes, moreover, if you try to take hair from your faces, you will paint yourself or stain material,
-
wear a pinny, if you stain your clothes and wash it quick, you will probably clean it without any remains; the pinny is useful in another thing too, if you have much water, it will be difficult to dry all brush well and quickly only with kitchen paper, it is easier to dry bristle with paper and handle with pinny,
-
always care of cleanliness in place you will be painting, one mistake can undo all work, so you need to feel free and comfortable.
LET'S START
In a few steps I will show you, how to do a doily like this:
Step 1.
We start with a design, I drew this one, but you can draw something else or even print something.
Step 2.
We move our design on the material. We have to put our linen to the bottom, put carbon paper on it and put the design on the top.
If you don't want, you don't have to copy the design. You can paint just looking on it. Copying usually make lines that are very dark and bright colors may not cover it.
Step 3.
We copy the contours. Just take a pen or pencil or something thin and blunt and with soft moves copy the contours. It is important to make this moves soft, precisely and draw only one line.
When we take paper, we see bright contours on the carbon paper:
And that's how our material look like:
Step 4.
Let's start painting. There is some method of painting. Here you have some rules that you should obey:
-
If you paint on dark materials, and even in all colors without white, firstly paint white layer, even if you would like to paint red apple, first paint white layer.
-
If you paint more then on layer, always wait to have last layer dried, except when you will shade and you will mix paints, in this case you should do it quickly because paints dry fast.
-
You can use a method that you will paint in order of colors, but be careful not to dirty your hand because you will stain the material.
-
The better way is to paint in order to direction. It means that you, if you are right-handed, should paint from top, left corner to bottom, right corner and, if you are left-handed, from top, right corner to bottom, left corner.
-
Rules 3rd and 4th you can mix together and paint firstly an element located in top corner, but paint it in order of colors, and then choose the next element.
- Do not take much paint on a brush.
I know that seems to be comfortable, more paint, quicker painting, but it isn't truth. By paintings like this, precision is the most important thing. If you have a lot of paint on a bristle, you make mistakes easier. The best way to paint is paint only with end of a bristle.
-
If you want to paint quick a large area, use flat brush and more paint, but remember to avoid edges. You should paint them with a small and flat or round brush.
-
Rinse your brushes often, paint dry really quick and even on a brush, especially on the top of a bristle, because of this the brush is inflexible and it is difficult to paint with it.
-
Do not cover material with thick layer of paint, when it dry, it looks ugly due to brush's tracks. Paint thin layers. If color is not pure, let the layer dry and paint next one. Even in case of black material three layers will be enough: first white, next with right color, and last shaded.
-
You can mix paints just on a material or more safety on a palette. It can be just ordinary, porcelain or glass plate, you will have no troubles to wash it, just take some water and a brush or some soap.
-
Never leave paint open, if you actually don't use them. If you mix colors on a palette and you use much paint, you will lose them because there is no good way to protect it for the next time. Cling film can protect it for some time, but paint will dry anyway.
-
Carefully add the black color by mixing, even small dot can make paint really dark, on the other hand, you will need to add much white color to lighten paint.
- You can dilute paint with water.
- Do not forget about the pad!
In this case (small doily), I will paint in order of colors. Remember that you can rotate your material to make painting easier.
We start with yellow:
Take a little paint on end of a brush:
And carefully paint.
Remember to wash the brush, when I was painting this yellow dots, I washed it two times.
And we paint another colors carefully. Try not to stain hands and material.
Step 5.
We wait either to have a layer dried and paint the next one (it would take about one hour) or we have done and we need to wait to have all paints really dried and it would take 24 hours.
I have painted my doily with one layer and I will wait one day to strengthen my painting.
Step 6.
Now we can strengthen our painting. To do this, we iron clothes inside out or we cover material with cloth. I prefer ironing with cloth.
Be careful with choosing the cloth. Firstly, it have to tolerate high temperatures including three dots, moreover it should be in the same color that painting is. Sometimes, while ironing, some little threads from the cloth stick to the painting.
On the beginning set your iron to 2 dots, iron for a while and increase to 3 dots. Of course, check how many dots the material can stand.
Iron a long time, put the iron, wait a while and move it, and so on.
If you don't have many layers, you will not see that cloth is stick to painting. That means that it is ready and painting is strengthen. But if you have many layers, you will see that the cloth is stuck. Separate them, and iron again. Repeat this since it will not be stuck.
The doily is ready!
The materials like this you need to wash hand and inside out and iron inside out too.
If you care about it, it will look great for a long time.
Materials like this behavior like any clothes with printed design.
